How I'm Having a Thoughtful, Meaningful and (somewhat) Pain-free Christmas in 2013
After most of 2013 passing by rather quickly-it is now December. The Holidays are always not quite a happy time for me and my family. We long to be together. But we all live in different parts of the United States. Busy jobs and the threat of bad weather keep us from travelling during the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's holidays.
This year seems to have been especially bad given that between the two of us Ernie and I had no less and really more than nine doctor appointments during the month of December. Most of them were mine. Those appointments and the fact that my work has been busy since my co-worker is out on medical leave probably until February and our part-timer hasn't been at work either for a while due to a fall, leaving me to be the main person doing Data Entry. December is usually a busy time for LHM as we receive many year end donations. And for Ernie, who is a delivery driver for Walter Knoll Florist, the holidays bring lots of extra deliveries and orders.
Usually our main Christmas celebration these days centers around preparing and singing in the Church Choir. This year, late nights and a snowstorm caused us to miss the final rehearsal for our Christmas Cantata. Not what we wanted to do, but work schedules and the weather interfered. On the day of the Cantata, I decided to help Ernie out by shovelling snow-what was I thinking? I'm not used to lifting heavy snow and it wasn't too long before my already rheumatoid arthritic back started hurting. No way I could even go listen to the Cantata. Disappointment.
Another week or so goes by. Schedules remain busy. It's Thursday, December 19. Ernie gets off work late and his shoulder is really paining him, so we miss our last choir rehearsal before Christmas Eve. We decide (and our Choir Director agreed) that since we haven't practiced the music there is no way we can sing in the Choir for Christmas Eve. This is especially true since our Christmas Eve service will be different this year. It's going to be earlier, 8pm instead of 10:30 or 11pm. This year there will be no 4:30pm children's service. We'll all celebrate together with a Service of Lessons and Carols. This means lots of singing !! of course we will attend the service and sit in the Congregation. Also, I've been chosen to be one of the Readers.
With a lot of appointments and a lot of late nights and not feeling so good at times, it's the 2nd year in a row that I have not sent Christmas Cards. Maybe I'll switch to a Christmas email. It's also the 2nd year that I haven't done Christmas gift shopping. Also, this year we decided not to put up our big tree since we have our dog Swee Dee. She is very curious and Ernie and I can just imagine her pulling ornaments off the tree, running away with the tree skirt, etc. In its place we have brought out a small sports-themed tree and a miniature Spode tree which are usually a part of our decorations. We didn't forget the Nativity scene from the Philippines-although we had to find a new, higher place for it-a length of red ribbon wrapped around the base makes it look more festive.
This Advent Christmas Season I have spent reading devotions, making use of a musical Advent Calendar (an app on my cell phone), thinking of Christmases past and remembering them sweetly and not fretting about what wasn't done this year. It feels good to not be caught up in all the secular hoopla of Christmas. Who needs that?
It's now Christmas Eve. What's done is done. I will spend the day resting up and doing a few last minute things and having my own kind of fun before the Christmas Eve Service.
To all of you have a very Merry Christmas where you can
Think, Live and Be Pain-Free !!!
Until next time....

Have an Attitude of Gratitude
I am thankful for a God who created me, knows me and cares for me. Also for a God who continuosly forgives me when I have gone astray.
I am thankful for my families, my own family, my work family and my church family.
I am thankful for my husband Ernie, who loves me and shares his life with me.
I am thankful for the freedom I enjoy as a citizen of the United States.
I am thankful to work at a place where I can love God openly and share my belief with others.
I am thankful for al the Doctors, Dentists, Nurses and Therapists who take care of me and help me to live a productive life.
I am thankful for Dogs, especially those that have been my companions in life and especially for our current dog Swee Dee.
I am thankful for music and the ability to sing, especially in my church choir.
I am thankful for a love of reading which brings me much happiness.
And my list could go on and on....
Remember to stop and take time this Holiday Season to practice an attitude of gratitude.
If you suffer from Chronic Pain like I do, it is especially important to make gratitude a part of you r life as it will go a long way in helping you to
Think, Live and Be Painfree...
Until next time,
Joy
P.S. If you need help learning how to practice gratitude and excellent place to start is an article by psychologist Dr. Linda Ruehlman entitled Living with Chronic Pain: Discovering Gratitude which can be found on her website goalistics.com.

Welcome Swee Dee
Having grown up with dogs as pets my husband Ernie and I knew we would get another dog after we had to have our dog Honey put to sleep on Friday, September 13, 2013. We spent a week or so reading about different breeds and searching internet adoption sites. You can get a feel for a dog that way, but its best to see one in person. My husband used his next day off, a Tuesday, to visit shelters in person. When he picked me up from work later that day he asked if I was up to making another trip to the shelter. He had seen a dog earlier that day that he wanted to show me. Unfortunately that dog had already been adopted. On our way out we happened to pass by a cute little white dog who was lying quietly and wagging her tail. We fell in love. We told a worker that we wanted a chance to see her and interact with her. It didn't take long for the 3 of us to endear ourselves to each other. So in September we became parents to Swee Dee whose picture I now share with you.

Her Last Day and a Tearful Good-bye
After a few weeks of carrying HONEY up and down our outdoor steps, watching her fall unexpectly down the flight of steps going to our basement, cleaning up many unintended accidents and helping her to stand up from a sitting position or pulling her out from under the bed, we decide it would be best to put our dog HONEY out of her pain and misery.
On Wednesday I call to make an appointment with Dr. Stroud and Rock Road Animal Hospital and tell them that we have decided its time to put HONEY to sleep. They schedule an appointment for Friday, September 13, 2013. It was only a sad coincidence that this day happened to fall on Friday the 13th. I tell my husband Ernie of the appointment.
The rest of Wednesday and Thursday go by and soon it is Friday morning. The day starts out normal with me going to work and Ernie still on vacation. I have arrange to take the afternoon off from work to attend to a few things. Ernie picks me up from work at 11:30am as we had planned. We drive to Oishi Sushi Restaurant not far from my work and have lunch. We then continue our drive home, stopping at our bank to have some papers notarized. Finally, we arrive home. HONEY is on the other side of the door waiting for us, just as she always is.
We relax for a couple of hours before the 3:00 appointment. During this time Honey drinks a lot of water, follows us around and looks at us several times like she knew something was about to happen. I decide to take a few pictures of her to have as a memory. She mostly willingly poses for them.
After I take the pictures, HONEY goes and lies down behind Ernie's recliner, a favorite spot of hers in these last few weeks.
The time comes to go to Rock Road Animal Hospital. HONEY has gotten herself positioned behind the recliner so that she can't get up without help. I bend down and try to put her leash on and she bites me on my right thumb. Is this her way of saying good-bye ? Ernie takes over and gets her leash on. We put her in the car and drive to the vet.
HONEY walks into the vet's office like this is something she does everyday. She heads toward the steps which lead to the boarding area because this is why she usually goes to Rock Road. We tell her no, we are here for a different reason this time. I walk over to the desk and get us checked in. Almost immediately we are taken to an emergency room. The room is cozy with pictures of dogs on the walls, a metal examining table, a wing chair and the usual medical stuff. The receptionist asks us if we want HONEY's ashes and we tell her that we don't, but we would like to have a paw print. She then takes care of collecting the $100.00 fee for this service so that all we have to to afterwards is walk out the door. We wait a few minutes and Dr. Stroud walks into the room. She explains the euthanasia procedure to us and asks if we want to be in the room when it takes place. We decide to stay. We tell Dr. Stroud how difficult it was to make this decision and also let her know that this is our first time going through this since Star, our first dog, died in the car on the way to the hospital. She is very understanding. She gives us a few final minutes with HONEY and then takes her into another room to insert an IV catheter. A sports ball themed fleece blanket is put on the floor.
Dr. Stroud comes back into the room with HONEY and decided to put her on the blanket but move it to the examining table. Despite all the times he has spent yelling at her in the last weeks, HONEY clings to Ernie.
Dr. Stroud administers the injections-a few minutes pass and she tells us that HONEY is gone. We thank her, linger with HONEY for a few minutes and then leave. On the way out we are comforted by another receptionist and I remember why we like this place. The people are extremely kind and caring. Then we get in the car and drive home. Another chapter of our life with a dog has ended. When the time is right I'm sure we will make room in our life for a new canine friend.
Until next time,
Think, Live and Be Pain-Free,
Joy**

Is it Time For a Teary Good-bye ?
This post is actually a tribute to our second dog, Honey. I remember when you first came into our lives. After 2 days without a dog we decided that it was time for another one . Having both grown up with a dog in the house and part of the family, we couldn't bear the silence and emptiness of our house without a dog. So we headed to all the shelters we knew. Honey endeared herself to us from the start. As if they knew we would probably make a home for one of them, the shelter dogs looked at us longingly as we walked up and down the aisles looking at each dog to determine if he or she would fit into our lifestyle and requirements. We knew we wanted an older dog, one that had already been housebroken. Honey must have known that too because while the other dogs just settled back down after we walked past them, Honey let us know that we should not just walk away from her by barking at us. Her bark and the fact that she was a beautiful honey-colored sheltie, lab and chow chow mix who has one and one half years old and housebroken made us decide to make room for her in our life.

Sharing Inspiration from Faces of Ankylosing Spondylitis
There is a wonderful girl who I have met through facebook. She is from Texas. She and I share a disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis. She is a super AS Warrior and Advocate. She is currently working on a project to collect 1000 faces of people with AS. This has done much to foster support among our community. Below I share one of her slideshows which includes a lot of inspiration from various people in the community. Enjoy !!
